Objectives

This course is a six-day timber framing course where you will learn the basics of timber frame construction. With hands-on learning you will gain the knowledge to build your own timber frame project. This course focuses on laying out and cutting the traditional joinery developed by our North American ancestors. You will also learn shop safety, proper tool use, sharpening skills, square rule layout and raising techniques.

We will build a 16' x 20' shed. Each student will learn how to layout and cut each piece of the frame. This includes tie beams, posts, knee braces, rafter plates and rafters. We will raise the frame together on the sixth day.

Trusses and Purlins - Perth Ontario

In this timber frame course the students will build a 16 x 20 timber frame truss building, using fully milled timbers. With a focus on layout, cutting and fitting trusses we will build a hammer beam and two king post timber trusses. There are traditional English tying joints between the tie beam and plates.

After completing the course, the students will be able to:

  • Layout joinery with pencils, chalk lines, and knifes for a timber frame truss
  • Identify truss joinery in tension and joinery in compression
  • Read timber frame drawings
  • Fit a Kingpost truss and Hammer Beam Truss
  • Layout and Cut and English tying joint
  • Determine rafter length using rise and run
  • Use ratio and proportion and similar triangles to determine timber joinery angles
  • Work with heavy machinery to raise a timber frame

Private Timber Frame Courses and Training

Timber Frame Courses can be designed to suit your requirements, from a one day workshop to several days designed around your schedule and students. The tool kit can be provided while the host will provide covered space or sun shade, power and washrooms. The timber can usually be sourced from a local supplier and we can help with sourcing and preparing the order.

Jason Gibson is invited on a regular basis to work with Willowbank and provide the students with training on layout and cutting traditional timber frame joinery as well as terminology and basic theory. This course usually runs from 3 to 5 days, with 10 - 15 students depending on the schedule at the college
